Mysore University Professor who spoke against PM Modi, Smriti Irani, jailed for remarks on Lord Rama

A journalism professor who teaches at Mysore University was arrested on June 17 for 'insulting' Lord Rama, a Hindustan Times report said. He has also been accused of insulting PM Narendra Modi and HRD Minister Smriti Irani in January this year..  

A case against Mahesh Guru, the professor, was registered for allegedly insulting Lord Rama at a conference in January 2015 and he was appearing in court seeking bail in the case. The case was filed by a fringe organisation Karnadu Sarvodaya Sena. Guru had spoken against Lord Rama over the unfair treatment of Goddess Sita in the mythology Ramayana.  

However, his bail plea was rejected as he was facing another case filed by Akhila Karnataka Dr Ambedkar Prachara Samiti for his 'insulting' remarks against PM Modi and Smriti Irani.

This year in January, Guru spoke against the HRD minister during the protest following Rohith Vemula's suicide saying she was a “third-rate actress unworthy of being the HRD minister”. A case was filed against him by Akhila Karnataka Dr Ambedkar Prachara Samiti. 

Guru has taught in Mysore University several years and has served in committees of the Union Public Service Commission and the Karnataka Public Service Commission. 

The report says  that the Mysore University might suspend him but Professor C Basavaraju, the registrar said that the university syndicate will inform about the decision only after the proceedings are out.
