After the murder of Md Afrazul Khan, the labourer from Malda district of Bengal, in Rajasthan, another death of a worker from Bengal has surfaced.

This time, 25-year-old Hemanta Roy, hailing from Bankura district was found with his throat slit, at Alappuzha district of Kerala on December 10.

Incidentally, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is at Bankura and would be addressing a public meeting on Wednesday. She is likely to speak about the death. She had, on Tuesday, said that workers from Bengal who were working outside the state and were facing insecurity, could return to their native land and they would be given work for 200 days a year or would be given Rs 50,000 to set up business unit.

Family members of Roy had claimed that he had been murdered. Senior police officials of Alappuzha district, however, said it could be a case of suicide.

"Prima facie investigation showed that it was a self-inflicted wound but we would be able to tell something concrete after the post-mortem report arrives," S Surendran, district police chief of Alappuzha district told DNA over the phone on Tuesday evening.

His family members alleged Roy had been murdered. They said that Roy had talked to them on December 9 and had said he was planning to return. “How come he would commit suicide the day next and that too by slitting his own throat which itself is highly suspicious,” said one of his family members. Bankura district police had contacted their Kerala counterpart and were probing into the matter.

It was found out that about two years ago, Roy had got married and has a six-month-old daughter. He was not getting enough work as an electrician in Bankura so he, along with some others of the adjoining district had left for Kerala about three months ago.

State BJP secretary Deboshree Chowdhury would lead a candlelight march in north Kolkata on Wednesday in solidarity with Roy's death.
