Mumbai: Man held for outraging modesty of girl in subway near Metro Cinema

The Azad Maidan police on Saturday arrested a youth for allegedly outraging modesty of a college girl in a subway near Metro Cinema. In the past too, such incident has taken place in the said subway, raising questions on the security of women.

The arrested person has been identified as Mohammad Sajel Mohammad Salim Hussain, a resident of Vitthalwadi in Thane.

According to the police, the girl is a final year Arts student in a reputed college near Metro Cinema and is a resident of Cuffe Parade. On January 30, after her classes got over, the left for home. "While she was in the subway, an unknown person there started making obscene comments. The girl, however, ignored him. But the man followed her and groped her. The girl pushed him and escaped from there," said an officer from Azad Maidan police station.

The girl was very frightened after the incident and kept mum about the incident. "She later told her friends about the incident. Her friends then advised her to lodged a police complaint. The victim then informed her parents and approached the police. She gave description of the suspect to the police, following which the culprit was arrested from Marine Lines area on Saturday," said the officer.

In January 2014, the Azad Maidan police had arrested one Dinesh Hiralal Makwana (20) for allegedly molesting a 14-year-old student of a renowned school of south-Mumbai in the same subway. The accused was nabbed by the police during patrolling.
