Ousted Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav on Sunday showed displeasure over his son Akhilesh Yadav striking any alliance with any political party, particularly the BSP, for 2019 parliamentary polls.

Talking to mediapersons in Saifai, in his hometown of Etawah, Mulayam nearly snubbed Akhilesh saying "there was no need to have an alliance with any political party for 2019 polls as Samajwadi Party was capable of defeating BJP on its own."

Significantly, Mulayam's snub came a day after SP President Akhilesh Yadav announced that Samajwadi Party is ready to enter into an alliance with any political party to defeat BJP in 2019 parliamentary polls.

He was reacting to BSP supremo Mayawati's announcement on Ambedkar Jayanti that BSP was not averse to any poll tie-up wih any party, including Samajwadi Party, to checkmate BJP.

Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam had vehemently opposed Akhilesh's decision to go for an alliance with Congress before the recently concluded Assembly polls. The result was total rout for both the alliance partners.

Now, ever since results are announced, Akhilesh is on backfoot and the father is calling the shots often issuing statements which are contrary to his son's political thinking. Party sources claim that Mulayam was particularly annoyed over Akhilesh hobnobbing with Mayawati, his arch political rival for the last 22 years.

On the other hand, the Congress Uttar Pradesh In-charge Ghulam Nabi Azad also broadly hinted that they may not continue alliance with the Samajwadi Party for the crucial 2019 parliamentary polls. "The party is yet to review review assembly poll debacle and the decision to continue or discontinue the alliance with the Samajwadi Party would be taken only after the meeting," Azad was quoted as saying.

Mulayam also held media and voters responsible for the Samajwadi Party defeat in assembly polls. "Akhilesh government had done good job on the development front but despite that voters defeated him. The media only showed party family feud and gave prominence to Modi campaign. This misled voters who favoured the BJP to power," he said in Etawah.

When asked about his return to active politics again after a brief lull due to family feud and taking over the party mantle again, Mulayam quipped that the post of party national president or any post was redundant for a leader like him. "What post did Jai Prakash Narain or Dr Ram Manohar Lohia hold"? he asked hinting that he will allow his son Akhilesh to continue as party president but would intervene in his political decisions whenever necessary.

"Whatever step I take, it would be in the interest of the party and people of the state," he said putting to rest speculations that the former wrestler is retiring from politics.
