Gloves are off between two former allies after senior BJP leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Kavinder Gupta demanded a probe against former J&K Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti for her remarks over PhD scholar-turned militant Mannan Wani and the students of Aligarh Muslim University.

Mehbooba in a series of tweets described Mannan Wani “a victim of relentless violence in Kashmir” and asked centre to step in and revoke the suspension of the AMU students, who offered funeral prayers in absentia to the PhD scholar-turned militant.

Twenty-six-year old Mannan Bashir Wani, a PhD scholar turned top Hizbul Mujahedeen commander was killed on Thursday, 10 months after he dropped-out of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) to join the militant ranks in Jammu and Kashmir.

“Pushing youth to the wall will be counterproductive. Centre must intervene in withdrawing cases against students & AMU authorities must revoke their suspension. The respective State governments outside JK should be sensitive to the situation & prevent further alienation. It will be a travesty to punish them for remembering their former colleague who was a victim of relentless violence in Kashmir”, tweeted Mehbooba.

Hours later BJP hit back and demanded action probe by a central agency against Mehbooba. “It is an irresponsible statement from a person who has been chief minister and head of the Unified Command who knows all the secrets.  It is not good thing. Lakhs of Kashmiri students are studying outside the state and no action was taken against anyone. If anyone is involved in any anti-national activity, action should be taken against them”, said Gupta.

Former deputy chief minister said a probe should be ordered against Mehbooba because supporting any terrorist is also a treason.

“Sheltering militants or supporting them is also treason. Probe should be ordered against Mehbooba. It is up to centre which agency they find fit to probe against Mehbooba”, he said.
