Mothers of two class 9 students — Ritu Raj Morean and Mantu Moran — who have been missing since 4 December, have appealed to the United Liberated Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) Chief Paresh Baruah to send them back home.

After investigation, police suspects that both the boys have joined the insurgent outfit. So, in a alast ditch effort, the mothers of both the boys have sent out an SOS request to Baruah to send their sons back home as they "can't live without them".

"The police has told us that both of them have joined the ULFA in the forests of Arunachal Pradesh. If this is true, I request ULFA chief Paresh Baruah to kindly return our sons to us because without them we both cannot live. We plead to you as both are still children," they said.

Though ULFA was beaten back, it has emerged stronger in the Tinsukia district of Assam. Recently, it was suspected to be involved in the barbaric massacre of five labourers of Tinsukia Dhaula. Until now, the police and the Army have not succeeded in reining in the increasingly dangerous developments.

With the news of the disappearance of two school students from Pensheri of Tinsukia, the apprehensions that the ULFA insurgency is growing again has created an atmosphere of fear among general public.

The disappearance has also led to anger among fellow students, as the police though have lodged a missing persons' report, but has not been able to conduct any fruitful investigations.

Tinsukia is surrounded by dense forests at the border of Arunachal Pradesh. Certain of the presence of many camps of ULFA and other Nagaland militant outfits, the Army has launched several operations here, but due to the tough mountainous terrain, has failed to keep the area insurgent-free despite pressing helicopters into service.
