Aimed at ensuring that his governance agenda dominates public discourse and trumps Opposition onslaught over a host of issues, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday held meeting with the chief ministers of all BJP-ruled states and appraised them of the focal points.

Apart from the CMs of 13 BJP-ruled states, BJP president Amit Shah, the deputy CMs of five states, Home Minister Rajnath Singh, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, and Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu attended the meeting.

The meeting was an appraisal of sorts, where the BJP chief and the PM held individual meetings with each of the 13 CMs to understand their problems and challenges in meeting goals, and to look at their achievements. It is understood that the Centre had carried out a survey of sorts to appraise the achievements of the BJP-ruled states.

With Gujarat, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram and Tripura going to the polls in 2018, and with the BJP's massive majority in the Uttar Pradesh polls, the meet is seen both as a show of strength and a call for action for the upcoming General Assembly polls in 2019.

Uttar Pradesh, it is learnt, has sought Central assistance as the state exchequer is reeling under a debt to the tune of Rs 35,000 crore. CM Yogi Adityanath is reportedly keen on a special package for Western UP and Bundelkhand, and for help in paving over 3,000 kilometres of national highway within the state's boundaries.

Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal, who has been at the helm for over ten months now, is understood to have appraised the party leadership of the state government's scheme in the health and education sectors.

The party had also held a meeting will its rainbow coalition of 33 NDA allies early this month, where the leadership stressed on a double digit growth, and to have a larger NDA imprint in 2019. In the party executive meet in Bhubaneshwar last week, BJP chief Amit Shah had stressed on having a BJP CM in every state in the future.

This is the third such meeting of the CMs of BJP-ruled states; while one was held in 2010, another was convened in August last year. In August, the meeting, held at the Maharashtra Sadan in Delhi, was attended by nine BJP CMs. In the meeting, BJP president Amit Shah had stressed on the implementation of government-sponsored pro-poor schemes in all the states. Shah had reminded them that of the 80 state-sponsored schemes, the CMs were responsible for the implementation of over 65 schemes.

In that meeting, too, the CMs presented details of the implementation of key NDA schemes likes Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Jan Dhan Yojana, Make In India, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Start-up India in their states.
