After the overrated BJP National Executive meet in Goa and the controversial elevation of Narendra Modi as the campaign leader it was not surprising to see the resignation letter of LK Advani.

After the resignation of the BJP patriarch LK Advani, the entire party was stunned and left in a lurch. It caused a massive stir in allied parties and the internal members of BJP. The opposition did not lose out on the opportunity and lashed out vehemently. Here is a quick lowdown on today's developments

* Arun Jaitley, Sushma Swaraj, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Ananth Kumar meet Advani to persuade him to withdraw resignation after Parliamentary Board resolution.

* "The party and the nation needs Adavniji. The entire parliamentary Board has come to a consensus that Adavaniji is a core part of the party. As the party President I reject his resignation," said Rajnath Singh addressing the media after the end of the emergency meeting.

* 'Over ambition' of some BJP leaders has resulted in the resignation of party patriarch L K Advani and it would be difficult for many of them to work with the same ambition without its 'architect', actor-politician Shatrughan Sinha said. "BJP without Advani is unthinkable ... His resignation is a bolt from the blue for the party," Sinha, Lok Sabha member from Bihar said.

* It is for the third time in eight years today that BJP leader L K Advani has resigned from top party posts including once over the huge controversy over his praise of Pakistan's founding father Mohammed Ali Jinnah. 85-year-old Advani, a founder member of BJP, had first resigned as party president on June seven, 2005 following widespread criticism from the RSS and right wing outwits over his remarks praising Jinnah during his six-day visit to Pakistan. Advani had described Jinnah as a "secular" leader.

* Apparently Advani’s resignation is no longer about having two poll committees, stated reports. He’s now upset about one group taking over the party and wants that corrected. Doesn’t seem like that’s going to happen.

* A meeting between Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and Advani could also take place in the next 24-48 hours. The meeting was reportedly to have taken place yesterday but didn’t take place.

* Modi claimed yesterday that Advani had given him his blessings, the two leaders hadn’t spoken to each other and a call had been made from Modi’s office to Advani’s office. If there were any blessings, they weren’t given directly, the report stated.

* Senior BJP leader Venkiah Naidu exited party chief Rajnath Singh’s residence while Amit Shah, Narendra Modi‘s cheif aide arrived. Leaving the venue, Naidu revealed little about what was happening in the party. “This is not a matter for debate in the media,” Naidu told reporters.

* The BJP top leaders call for an emergency meet to discuss the resignation of Advaniji. The decision on whether the resignation will be accepted or not still remains to be ascertained. The party chief was also in a huddle with leaders including Arun Jaitley on how to tackle the crisis that has exposed the rift in the party wide open.

*  Congress’ Rajeev Shukla has criticised the BJP saying that even if it is voted to power it will be a government that fights with each other. “Yesterday BJP was saying all was well, today we find out all is not well with the party,” he said. He also chose not to miss the opportunity to make a comment on Narendra Modi and his claim that he had LK Advani’s blessings while being picked to lead the party’s campaign in 2014. “Advani’s resignation is one of the many repurcussions of Narendra Modi’s elevation,” a spokesperson was quoted as saying. Meanwhile, BJP MP Kirti Azad has said that the party will speak to Advani about his resignation. RSS says Advani’s resignation is unfortunate.

* The dramatic development prompted leaders to rush to Advani's residence in a bid to pacify him but he showed no signs of relenting. Advani turned down the pleas of senior leaders including Sushma Swaraj, Venkaiah Naidu and Ananth Kumar to withdraw the resignation.

* The BJP has refused to comment on Advani’s letter of resignation from the three posts he held in the party.

* Jethmalani says the decline of the party started with his expulsion. He also said that Advani had lost his sense and has become senile.
