Member of Legislative Council (MLC) Ramnath Mote has threatened to jump off the sixth floor of Mantralaya unless the education department transfers funds to the schools that are eligible for government aid. Mote has also sent a letter containing the threat to education minister Vinod Tawde and Principal Secretary of the School Education and Sports department Nand Kumar.

In his letter dated June 12, Mote has alleged that despite his following up with the education department for the past year, grant money has not been made available to more than 400 eligible schools from the state. The letter also states that it is not just schools that have been deprived from getting government grants- 926 teachers are working without salary in junior colleges as well.

Anil Bornare, President, Shikshak Parishad, Mumbai region, said, "The MLC has been following up on the issue with the education department for the past year. Though there are enough funds, many teachers are not paid. The aided schools that have increased their divisions are also waiting for aid from the government." Bornare said that the funds were unavailable because the officials from the Education department failed to put forth this demand in the winter session of legislature.

Mote said, "I have been getting constant calls from teachers and schools. Teachers are claiming they have no choice but to commit suicide if they are not paid their salaries by the government. So I have decided to take this drastic step when the session starts on July 13."

dna made several calls to Principal Secretary Nand Kumar and Education minister Vinod Tawde, but they were not available for comment.
