The VP Road police have arrested a 22-year-old youth from Mira Road on charges of duping a south Mumbai businessman of Rs5 lakh. Yash Amin, alias Kavit Sawla, extracted the money from the 47-year-old complainant by luring him with a deal to buy his hotel.
Posing as the son of a top tourist bus operator from city, Sawla offered Rs2.11 crore to Bhagwanram Bishnoi for the property. He sweet-talked Bishnoi to give him Rs5 lakh and bought gold for his sister, said the police.
The police said Bishnoi deals in metals and has a shop at Khetwadi, while his hotel at Sidhpur in Gujarat has been rented out. On September 30, Sawla approached Bishnoi with a proposal to buy the hotel.
"At that time, Sawla claimed to be the son of a top tourist bus operator. On October 7, Sawla again met Bishnoi and finalised the deal for Rs 2.11 crore and settled the token amount at Rs 11 lakh. Amid this, Sawla had asked for a loan of Rs 5 lakh from Bishnoi. Trusting that he was from an affluent background, Bishnoi gave him the money," said an officer from VP Road police station.
Sawla asked Bishnoi to collect Rs5 lakh and the token amount from his Andheri office. Later, Sawla called Bishnoi, saying a close relative of his had passed away and that he would be leaving for Ahmedabad and would return after 12 days, the police said.
On October 19, Sawla again met Bishnoi and asked for more help of Rs 4 lakh, which the former refused. When Bishnoi asked for his Rs 5 lakh, Sawla started avoiding him. Suspecting that he has been duped, Bishnoi lodged a case of cheating against Sawla at VP Road police station. Following a trap, the cops arrested Sawla from Mumbai Central on October 25. He is a resident of Ramdev Nagar Park at Kashimira in Mira Road, they said.
"Sawla had spent the money on a gold biscuit that he gifted to his sister, a medical student in a Vadodara hospital," the officer said.
