Since 2008, several United Progressive Alliance (UPA) ministers have been forced to resign based on corruption charges. Before Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal and Law and Order Minister Ashwani Kumar, four UPA ministers have been sacked.

Reports said that Bansal's nephew Vijay Singla received Rs 90 lakh part payment for the transfer of railway board member Mahesh Kumar. Bansal was reported to be involved in this transfer.

Ashwani Kumar, on the other hand, said, "I tendered my resignation to put an end to unnecessary controversy in a matter pending before the Supreme Court. My conscience remains clear and I believe I will remain vindicated".

Here is the list of the ministers who were asked to step down before Bansal and Kumar:

Shashi Tharoor

Tharoor was the Minister of State for External Affairs in 2009 and he resigned in less than a year of appointment. The Opposition accused him of misusing his position as he lobbied for an IPL franchise for Kochi that included as an employee Tharoor's then girlfriend — Sunanda Pushkar, who was gifted equity worth Rs 70 crores.

Under severe pressure from Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, the Congress core committee decided to ask for Tharoor's resignation. He submitted his resignation on 18 April 2010.

A Raja

A. Raja, Union Cabinet Minister (Communication and Information Technology) from 2007-10, resigned on 14 November 2010 due to his alleged involvement in the 2G spectrum scam.

In a report submitted by the Central Bureau of Investigation, Raja was held responsible for the sale of 2G spectrum at 2001 rates in 2008. A report by the CAG also claimed that Raja had signed and approved most of the controversial allocations. Faced with many such charges, Raja was forced to resign and taken into custody.

Dayanihdhi Maran

Maran was the Minister for Textiles in the Union Cabinet, and has also served as the Minister for Communications and Information Technology before that. He resigned from the position of Minister for Textiles in July 2011.

As the telecom minister, he was alleged to have arm-twisted the promoter of mobile service provider Aircel to sell out to Malaysian telecom firm Maxis.

Virbhadra Singh

Virbhadra Singh and his wife Pratibha Singh were booked by Himachal Pradesh Police on Aug 3, 2009, under the Prevention of Corruption Act for alleged misuse of official position and criminal misconduct when he was the chief minister in 1989.

He resigned from the Union Cabinet, a day after a court in Shimla framed corruption charges against him. Singh said he decided to step down on moral grounds as he did not want to embarrass the party.
