Mayurbhanj Lok Sabha constituency voted in the 4th phase of General Elections 2019. Here is lowdown of how candidates have fared

Mayurbhanj Lok Sabha constituency profile

Mayurbhanj Lok Sabha constituency is witnessing a very keen contest this time between BJD, BJP and JMM, which is in alliance with Congress.

BJD has dropped sitting MP Ramchandra Hansda and has gone for a former student leader and doctor Debashis Marndi. He is up against BJP's Bisheswar Tudu and Shibu Soren's daughter Anjali Soren.

In the last Lok Sabha election, BJD candidate Ramchandra Hansda won by a comfortable 1.20 lakh margin. Debashish Marndi contesting for JMM came third. But the tides turned in 2017 Panchayat election when BJD only won 5 of the 56 Zilla Parishad seats. Rest were won by BJP. This clearly shows that BJP has massively gained using anti-incumbency putting BJD in a tight spot. Historically Jharkhand Mukti Morcha has enjoyed clout in ST-reserved Mayurbhanj which is home to several tribes like Santhals, Kolha among others. Hence Anjali Soren will be no pushover.

There are 57% tribals in Mayurbhanj. Jashipur, Saraskana, Rairangpur, Bangriposi, Udala, Baripada, Morada are the Assembly segments in Mayurhanj seat.

In campaign trail, Patnaik accused BJP of shedding fake teas for Odisha. In a public meeting at Mayurbhanj, Patnaik said, "At the time of elections, the big leaders of the BJP remember Odisha. But when there is a major natural disaster, no leaders are seen here. Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi cannot be seen. But now in the elections, all BJP leaders came to Odisha and showed crocodile tears."

He also accused BJP of trying to scuttle work of PRM Medical College where SC had to intervene. In the past, Congress has won the seat five times.
Assembly segments under Mayubhanj are Jashipur, Saraskana, Rairangpur, Bangriposi, Udala, Baripada, Morada.

It goes to polls on April 29.
