Massive op in north Kashmir, one terrorist killed

Shifting focus to north Kashmir, security forces on Tuesday launched a major operation in Kupwara district, killing one terrorist.

The operation was launched after security forces received a tip-off about the presence of terrorists at Hongnikote in Haphruda forest area of Kupwara district. The area was immediately cordoned off and when the security forces were zeroing in on the target, they came under heavy fire from the terrorists.

Forces retaliated immediately and in the ensuing encounter one terrorist was killed. "One terrorist killed by security forces in Haphruda. Operations in progress," tweeted Northern Command of Indian Army.

The operation in north Kashmir comes after successful encounters in the troubled south Kashmir region. More than 135 terrorists have been killed in different encounters across Kashmir so far this year. The nation lost 43 of its brave Army jawans in the process.

Data released by MHA reveal that 150 terrorists were killed in 2016 compared to 108 in 2015. As many as 82 Army personnel were killed in 2016 compared to 39 in 2015. There were 322 terrorist incidents in 2016 compared to 208 in 2015. That is an increase of 54.81 per cent in the number of terrorist incidents and 110.25 per cent in fatalities of security forces.

Data released by MHA reveals that there have been 364 infiltration attempts last year compared to 121 in 2015. Estimated net infiltration (number of terrorists who managed to sneak in) was 112 in 2016 compared to 33 in 2015. Similarly 222 infiltration attempts were made in 2014 and estimated net infiltration was 65. In 2013, 277 infiltration attempts were made and 97 terrorists managed to sneak in.
