While the Modi government celebrates three years in the Capital, BJP President Amit Shah has been flying to various corners of the country, as he prepares his party for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Shah has set himself an onerous task of covering 34 places by September, dedicating 110 days to the party’s expansion. His tour revolves around five objectives — ensuring proper interpretation of the BJP’s ideology, strengthening the organisation, making the BJP’s functioning more systematic, sharper political functioning and assessing the party’s footprint ahead of the next general elections.

He has already travelled to Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Tripura as part of his 95-day yatra and is set to make three-day visits to Telangana, Lakshadweep, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Odisha over the next two months. The other 15 days are part of the Deendayal Vistarak Yojana covering four states — West Bengal, Gujarat, Odisha and Telangana — and Lakshadweep.

A party leader said Shah, who avoided taking chartered flights and preferred to stay in government guest houses, devoted around 16 hours of his day to back-to-back meetings, working till past midnight. Over three days, Shah held 16 meetings ranging from party leaders to intellectuals and various sections depending on the social state.

In Tripura, where CPM’s Manik Sarkar has been the Chief  Minister for four consecutive terms, Shah held meetings with tribal leaders and intellectuals. In Congress-ruled Himachal Pradesh, he also focused on reaching out to the Dalits.

His schedule includes eastern and southern states, barring Tamil Nadu, where the BJP has so far failed to make significant inroads.

Analysis

Amit Shah has become the BJP’s go-to man for election strategies.

His aim is to usher in a golden era for the party, helping it capture the political space from panchayats to the Parliament across the country.
