West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday raised concerns over the growing Maoist activity in the state’s Jhargram region.

She was in the region on occasion of International Tribal Day. “In Belpahari, some miscreants are bringing in Maoists from Jharkhand because they want to see Bengal bleed. Do not support Maoists or let them enter this region. I have nothing against the people of Jharkhand, but condemn Maoist activity. Be vigilant and do not believe in rumours,” she told the people at the rally.

DNA and Zee News were the first news agencies to report the Maoist activity in the region.  The July 29 report highlighted how after six years of peace in West Bengal following the death of Kishenji, Maoists had been sighted in the border districts.

Central intelligence officers had confirmed the reports, adding that Maoist activity was led by state secretary Akash, particularly in villages along Bengal-Jharkhand border in the districts of Jhargram and Purulia.

Significantly, these renewed Maoist activities come at a time the districts of Jhargram and Purulia are heading for political turmoil with the TMC starting to lose its grip.

It was evident from the results of the recently-held rural polls that resentment against Trinamool Congress is growing among the people of Jhargram and Purulia, where people at some places supported BJP and independent tribal outfits at some other places to defeat the ruling party leaders.

Banerjee while trying to consolidate her tribal votes highlighted that if tribal families were not getting their dues, they should reach out to the administration. She also instructed the police that they have to ensure that the tribal families get the dues under all the government schemes introduced for them.

“More than 1,000 tribals are a part of these community development programs. I'm asking police to visit these tribal families and see whether they are getting Rs.2 per kg rice, if not getting then find out who all are behind it and book them. Please ensure that the tribal communities benefit from the schemes,” Banerjee said.
