After differences over the plea challenging Tamil Nadu’s new law on Jallikattu before the Supreme Court cropped up within the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI), a majority of its members have supported the interim application, sources privy to developments said. The SC is set to hear the matter on Tuesday.

On Friday, AWBI’s acting chairperson SS Negi sent a mail to the board’s members, seeking their views on the new law and on possible withdrawal of the interim application filed by one of its members, Anjali Sharma, in SC. The chairperson sought a response by 5pm Sunday. But with only few members responding, they were granted time till Monday 5pm to respond. Of 21 board members, 13 supported the interim application.

The chairperson SS Negi though, said that a final decision was not yet taken. “We haven’t taken a decision yet. Once the secretary (M Ravikumar) arrives in Delhi, we will take a call. He is processing the responses. We can always go for a supplementary affidavit,” Negi told DNA.

The differences in AWBI, a statutory advisory body, cropped up soon after Sharma filed an interim application against the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Tamil Nadu Amendments) Act, 2017 last Tuesday. The application was filed in the writ petition of 2016, that challenged environment ministry’s notification permitting Jallikattu. AWBI secretary M Ravikumar wrote a letter to Sharma on January 25, asking her to withdraw any petition filed before the SC against Jallikattu.

Sharma though, stuck to her stance and said that the interim application was filed after due consultation and approvals from the board. She is the convener of the board’s legal sub-committee and also a petitioner, in her individual capacity, in the petition that challenged Centre’s 2016 notification permitting Jallikattu.
