Blaming banks for not providing complete information of farmers, Minister for Co-operation Subhash Deshmukh on Tuesday said that it would not be possible to provide loan waiver on October 1, 2017. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had announced on the floor of the state assembly that the loan waiver would be provided by October this year.

After a meeting of the Cabinet sub-committee on loan waiver, Deshmukh informed that the government would be able to deposit money towards loan waiver in farmers’ accounts by Diwali. He said that even the State Bank of India has not yet provided complete information to the government. Deshmukh said that the entire information about loan waiver is available on the state government’s website — Aaple Sarkar.

The Cabinet sub-committee during the meeting held on Tuesday took the bank representatives to task for not completing the loan waiver process. All the banks have been asked to complete the process by September 30 so that the government can provide loan waiver to eligible farmers after scrutiny.

Deshmukh informed that even though there are 89 lakh registered farmers in the list of loan waiver, the loan waiver benefit would be extended to one person from every family.

He pointed out that this is the reason that despite having 89 lakh farmers, 56,59,393 families have applied for loan waiver and a total of 77.26 lakh farmers are covered in this process.

Talking about the 25,000 farmers from Mumbai who have applied for loan waiver, Deshmukh said that there are many farmers who have Aadhaar card issued from centres in Mumbai but have their farmland out of Mumbai. He said that even though there are 25,000 applications from Mumbai, loan waiver will be made available only after a thorough scrutiny of every application.
