Maharashtra Polls 2019: Easy ride for Fadnavis in home ground of Nagpur South West

Devendra Fadnavis, chief minister of Maharashtra, is all set to contest from Nagpur South West seat in the upcoming state assembly election, scheduled to take place on October 21.

Fadnavis is contesting from Nagpur South-West seat after a successful term as Maharashtra Chief Minister. He will be the second chief minister of Maharashtra after former CM Vasantrao Naik who is completing his full tenure.

The incumbent chief minister is eyeing a 5th consecutive victory as a legislator and a third consecutive term from South-West seat.

Challenging Fadnavis in Nagpur South-West is Congress' Ashish Deshmukh, a former leader of the BJP.

Hitting out at Fadnavis, Deshmukh said that the chief minister is so confident of his victory that he has left to party workers to campaign while he is busy campaigning around the state. 

In 2014 polls, Fadnavis won with a margin of 59,000 after he defeated Congress candidate Praful Gudadhe Patil.

Born in Nagpur on July 22, 1970, Fadnavis’ father was the member of Maharashtra Legislative Council from Nagpur and his mother was the former director of the Vidarbha Housing Credit Society. He graduated in 1992 from Government Law College in Nagpur.

At the time of initial schooling, he was enrolled in Indira Convent (named after Indira Gandhi), but he later withdrew his admission from school after his father Gangadhar, who was a Jan Sangh member, was jailed for anti-government protests during Indira Gandhi’s regime.

He completed his schooling from Saraswati Vidyalaya School and later went to Dharampeth Junior College for his intermediate.

Fadnavis later pursue post-graduate in Business Management and a diploma in methods and techniques of project management from DSE (German Foundation for International Development), Berlin. 

In Politics

Fadnavis was an active member of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and won his first municipal election from Ram Nagar Ward. He achieved another milestone when he became the youngest mayor of Nagpur Municipal Corporation and the second youngest mayor in the country.

Fadnavis won his first election on assembly seat from Nagpur legislative assembly and currently serving his fourth term.

In 2014, after winning the election from Nagpur legislative council, under the leadership of top BJP leaders, Fadnavis was elected as the leader of BJP’s legislative party and became the second-youngest chief minister of Maharashtra.
