Opposition parties in Maharashtra extend their support to the former finance minister and senior BJP leader Yashwant Sinha’s indefinite protest at Akola police ground to press the farmer’s demand charter. Akola is turning as the epicentre for the political activities.

Earlier Sinha was also detained by the Maharashtra police and subsequently released. The farmers' demands include that the farm loan waiver should reach farmers, fair prices to farmers crops, buying the farm produces by the central government agency NAFED etc.

NCP president Sharad Pawar, Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray, farmers leader Raju Shetty and disgruntled BJP MP Nana Patole extended their support to Mr Sinha. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also tweeted in support of Mr Sinha. Ms.Bannerjee tweeted that she would send her party MP Dinesh Trivedi to Akola to meet Mr Sinha.

Sinha is known to be critical of Narendra Modi government’s economical and farmer policies.

NCP leader Gulabrao Gavande from Akola also accompanied Mr Sinha. Moreover, another BJP MP Shatrughan Sinha, Arun Shourie and activist Yogendra Yadav are also likely to join this protest.

Sinha clarified that he is not against the ruling party but he wants to fulfil the farmers' demands.

Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan also extended the support and said that by detaining Mr Sinha, BJP has shown once again its facist and anti-farmers face. “Without the consultation of the top BJP leadership in Delhi, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis would not ask the local police to arrest its own senior leader and former finance minister Yashwant Sinha. It is very unfortunate that farmers demands are not met but they have been harassed and arrested,” said Chavan.
