Maharashtra: Heavy rainfall predicted from June 9 to 11, TMC asks people to shift to safe places

The Thane Municipal Corporation has upped its ante to meet any eventuality which Thanekars may experience on account of heavy rainfall as predicted by Skymet from June 9 to June 11.

It has asked people from low lying areas in Thane to shift to other safe places to avoid getting submerged during heavy rains.

The Skymet’s prediction of heavy rainfall this weekend has been taken seriously by the Thane municipal corporation (TMC). 

The TMC officials have started its awareness campaign among Thane residents to shift to safe places.  “As per our commissioner’s instructions we are asking people in low lying areas of Thane to go to better, safe places before the 3-day rainfall hits Thane,” says Ashok Burpulle from TMC’s demolition department.

The residents have been asked to take refuge with their relatives, friends or whom so ever they are comfortable with.  “If people do not have a place to go they can seek shelter at TMC run schools, vacant buildings, etc.,” he says.  

TMC commissioner Sanjeev Jaiswal has also asked the civic staff to acquire wedding halls to accommodate people during these three days of rainfall.  “We are also getting private wedding halls, TMC halls, etc., so that people can stay here during heavy rains,” he says.

Moreover, leaves and off days of all the civic staff have been canceled from June 9 to June 11 and they have been asked to be present in TMC headquarter at Pachpakhadi to meet any challenge that arises in this period. 18 senior officers have been deputed to be present in three shifts, 24x7 in TMC’s control room to handle all kinds of emergencies.

There are over 35 flood-prone areas in Thane and TMC’s nullah cleaning work started mid-May due to late tendering process.
