Keeping the controversial land acquisition policy aside, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Wednesday that the state government will buy land directly from farmers by offering four times its market value, besides 25% additional compensation.

Fadnavis said the Centre's land acquisition Bill has been referred to the joint committee of Parliament. "Let them take whatever decisions they want. We can't wait till the central government passes its Bill. We have to carry out projects and infrastructural work (here). Since the approval of the previous government's land acquisition policy, not an inch of land was acquired under it. Now, acquisition will be done with 100% farmers' consent. We will not acquire the land forcefully," he added.

He also said it is a unique decision that will benefit farmers. "The rise in compensation amount will surely increase the cost of projects also. But as long as farmers are benefitting, we have no issue. Let the farmers also earn something," the chief minister said.

Fadnavis has already told his officials to start dealing and negotiating with farmers for buying land for government projects. "The compensation package for the land would be decided by a district-level committee headed by the district collector and having five others on board. A resolution in this regard too was issued recently," said a senior Mantralaya official.

"The new decisions will be win-win for farmers and government. In the Navi Mumbai International Airport project also, we offered 22.5% developed land to farmers against their land. We have also decided to develop this allotted developed land on the line of Magarpatta city, where the locals are main stakeholders of the development. They will not give away their development right. We have never cheated farmers."

The official added that prime minister Narendra Modi should learn from the Maharashtra model rather than using coercive methods to acquire farmers' land.
