This Independence Day, Maharashtra will become the first state to have a cyber crime forensic lab in each district. The labs will be inaugurated simultaneously at 42 districts, including one at the World Trade Centre, on Monday morning in Mumbai, which will be the head office.

They will have facilities to analyse mobile forensic and call detail records. In the next phase, the department is expected to tie up with major global players in the field of social media analytics for software and other cyber-related machines.

While chief minister Devendra Fadnavis will inaugurate the head office, the other centres will be inaugurated by the guardian ministers.
"I recently visited the Microsoft office and was surprised to learn that, every minute, more than 100,000 attacks are being attempted at various websites. Online crime these days has exceeded street crime, and, therefore, we feel the need to upgrade the cyber crime system on priority," Fadnavis told dna.

Fadnavis also said that the state is likely to set up 17 more such labs in the next week or fortnight. Finally, there will be 51 cyber labs across the state.
Brijesh Singh, IG cyber, who is in charge of the project, said that the most exemplary thing about the project is that though the first phase started from scratch, it was completed in a month.

Fadnavis also said that the proposed Cyber crime project is expected to be completed by December this year.
The proposed project, worth Rs 800 crore, comprises three parts --- Cyber labs, Computer Emergency Response Team and a Training Centre. The department plans to train at least 1,000 police personnel to crack cyber crimes.

One of the main reasons for investing so much in the cyber project is to improve the conviction rate in cyber crime cases. The highest number of cyber crimes are registered in Maharashtra but the state has a dismal record when it comes to conviction. Out of the thousands of arrests made, only one has been convicted, according to a senior Mumbai police officer. In the last four years, there has not been a single conviction. To make matters worse, 16 of those arrested were acquitted.
