While incessant rainfall and cloudy weather marked the weekend for Nashik, it kept drizzling through the Monday as well. The district received 1,899mm rainfall in the last 24 hours. Sunday recorded the highest rainfall of 991mm in a single day in the last 10 years in Nashik.

The Godavari river had swelled threateningly on Sunday morning and continued to be aggressive till late in the evening. Those living or owning shops and kiosks in the low-lying areas, in addition to those who had parked their vehicles there, bore the brunt of the flood. While most vehicles were pulled to safety, four were washed away.

By the afternoon, water had started flowing over the Ram Setu bridge, while it continued pouring. The water level finally started receding in the evening.

The damage caused by the flood became evident on Monday. Four four-wheelers, two scooters and a couple of kiosks were pulled out by cranes. The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) also deployed machines to clear slush from banks and roads. Shopkeepers in the area, however, remained skeptical and did not open their stores.

Railings of many bridges were washed away, while plankton, weeds and silt got deposited on the structures. Four persons were stranded in their houses. They were later rescued by the fire brigade personnel.

Meanwhile, the NMC has taken a decision to roll back the one-day water cut that was implemented every Thursday. The decision will be reviewed by July end, officials said.

Elsewhere in the district was lashed with rain as well. Many tehsils received record rainfall – Trimbakeshwar (208mm), Igatpuri (215mm), Peth (187mm), Nashik (184mm), Baglan (174mm), Surgana (158mm), Kalwan (143mm) and Dindori (134mm).

The disaster management cell of the district administration has issued a helpline number – 1077 – besides issued a warning of heavy rainfall for the next two days.
