The Madras High Court on Friday granted the authorities two weeks time "as a last opportunity" to file a counter to a PIL seeking a direction not to allow idols to be installed on the roadside. The court was hearing a PIL filed by social activist questioning the power of authorities to give permission for installation of idols on the roadside.

"There is no law in respect of this," the First Bench, comprising acting Chief Justice Satish K. Agnihotri and Justice M.M. Sundresh, in its interim order, observed.

The court said the authorities were directed to file counter affidavit to the PIL on September 9 last but there has been no response.

"As a last opportunity, two weeks of time is granted to file the scheme, provisions of Rules and Regulations governing the case," the court said.

The petitioner alleged the authorities permit blocking of roads by installation of idols and other structures in the name of religious functions, causing inconvenience to people, and sought a direction not to permit installation of idols on roads.
