Madhepura Lok Sabha Election Results 2019 Bihar: JD(U)'s Dinesh Chandra Yadav wins with a landslide margin

Sharad Yadav has won from here four times - 1991, 1996, 1999 and 2009. Lalu Yadav won from Madhepura Lok Sabha seat twice - 1998 and 2004.

Madhepura Lok Sabha Election Results:

Dinesh Chandra Yadav of the Janata Dal (United) emerged victorious, defeating rival Sharad Yadav of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) by a massive margin of over 3 lakh votes and a vote share of 54.42%. Sitting MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav came up third with 8.51% votes. 

RJD has fielded Sharad Yadav, a former JD(U) leader who turned rebel after Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar went back to the NDA, against JDU's Dinesh Chandra Yadav and sitting MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav.

The constituency went to polls in the third phase of the general elections on April 23.

Constituency profile

Madhepura Lok Sabha constituency is one of the 40 parliamentary constituencies in Bihar. Madhepura parliamentary constituency is made of six assembly constituencies with three each from Madhepura and Saharsa district. 

Sharad Yadav has won from here four times - 1991, 1996, 1999 and 2009. RJD chief and former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav won from Madhepura Lok Sabha seat twice - 1998 and 2004. 

The two socialists leaders faced each other thrice and Lalu came on top with a score of 2:1. Lalu has, however, not represented the Madhepura in Lok Sabha for much longer as the 12th Lok Sabha only lasted 13 months. In 2004, when Lalu won from both Chhapra and Madhepura, he decided to retain Chhapra. 

The Madhepura Lok Sabha constituency is made up of six Assembly constituencies - Madhepura district's Alamnagar, Bihariganj and Madhepura constituencies and Saharsa district's Sonbarsha, Saharsa and Mahishi constituencies.

The contest in Bihar is two-way in most seats with NDA pitted against Mahagathbandhan. While Janata Dal (United) is part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) which comprises of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), the Bihar Mahagathbandhan comprises Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Congress, Rashtriya Lok Samta Party (RLSP), Hindustan Awam Morcha (HAM) and Vikasshil Insan Party (VIP).

The Congress got nine constituencies as per the seat-sharing arrangements, while the RJD has 20 out of which it has forgone Ara in favour of the CPI(ML), which has returned the favour by announcing that the ultra-Left outfit would not field its candidate from Pataliputra, which would be contested by Lalu Prasad's eldest daughter Misa Bharti. 

Besides, Upendra Kushwaha's RLSP is contesting five seats and Jitan Ram Manjhis HAM is fighting three. The VIP, founded and headed by Bollywood set designer-turned-politician Mukesh Sahni, has got three seats out of the 40 in Bihar.
