Tragedy hit Indian army on Friday when a massive avalanche swept away their post killing three soldiers and injuring another along the Line of Control (LoC) in Machil sector of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

The incident occurred in late afternoon when a massive snow avalanche buried four soldiers who were manning a strategic post at the Sonapindi Gali along the LoC in the Machil sector.

Indian army rescuers launched a swift operation to locate the soldiers. However one of the soldiers died on the spot while two succumbed while being evacuated to the hospital. Another soldier was injured in the incident and he has been referred to hospital for treatment. “Today in an unfortunate incident of avalanche in Machil sector, the Army lost three valiant soldiers”, said an army spokesman at Srinagar. Indian army clarified that no soldier is missing in the avalanche. There is one injured and no one is missing”, said the spokesman.

This is the second major avalanche that has hit the army since December last year. On December 12, 2017 five Indian army soldiers were swept away by the massive snow avalanches at two different sectors along the Line of Control (LoC) in Bandipora and Kupwara districts of North Kashmir.  This is also the third avalanche to have hit Kashmir valley this year so far. Eleven people including an official of Border Roads Organization (BRO’s) Project Beacon were killed after massive avalanches struck at two different places on the high altitude Sadhana Top along the strategic Srinagar-Tangdhar highway in North Kashmir's Kupwara district on January 5. Three people were pulled out alive from the thick snow cover near the avalanche site on the highway

On January 18, a Swedish skier was killed in a massive avalanche that struck the Apharwat area in the upper reaches of famed winter resort of Gulmarg. Another skier however was rescued by the joint rescue team.
