It is a war of words within the new gossip handles on twitter, all scrambling to outdo the other to be the ultimate source of blather about Delhi's power corridors
When nothing else helps, gossip is the best subterfuge. A slew of twitter handles, all vying for the top spot of being the official gossip channel of Lutyen's Delhi has been sending out tweets of discreet developments in the Capital's power corridors, that usually does not go beyond the boundaries of Press Club.
Lutyens' Spice (@LutyensSpice), the one to start the trend by making an appearance on October 17, currently has 13,400 followers. Spice, which started by introducing itself as 'Lutyens' official gossip channel' did not spare politicos and journos alike. It spoke about the Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party and the Aam Aadmi Party in the same vein. Some felt that it was a Congress hack, while some speculated that the handle was run anonymously by journalist Sagarika Ghose. But on Monday morning, when it spelt Amit as 'Amith', it led to a lot of speculation that the handle was run by a south Indian.
Dropping names like bombs, Lutyens' Spice led to a smatter of other similar gossip channels. The next to join the club was @Lutyens'Masala, whose bio said that it was a retired right wing hack operating from a living room in Lutyens; Delhi. In construct, this handle seemed more inclined to the right, and many speculated that the handle belonged to Kanchan Gupta.
The gossip crowd was soon joined by handles like Lutyens Insider (@LutyensInsider), who concentrated more on journos, especially a celebrity journo couple. A series of disparaging tweets later, the account was reported and is currently in limbo. But he claims that he will bounce back, once the technicalities are sorted. Another journo gossip channel, that joined later, was Journalists' Spice (@JournosSpice).
Raisina Rumours (@RaisinaRumours) focused on the gossip within Raisina, including those of journos and politicos. Managed by a TV journalist, the person even dared tweeters to find out who he was. One of the last to join the bandwagon, and yet quite explosive was The Real Lutyens (@RealLutyens), who claimed that the others were paid channels of gossip.
