Five days after 17-year-old Aabesh Dasgupta was found dead at an upscale South Kolkata apartment, the police made startling revelations, indicating that Dasgupta’s death was an accident.

“After going through the CCTV footage, call details of the children present at the time of the incident and other statements, besides evidences, we are concluding that it was not a pre-meditated event,” said Vishal Garg, Joint Commissioner of Kolkata Police (Crime), indirectly indicating that Aabesh’s death was not a murder, but an accident.

However, family members claim that the police is trying to protect the children, who come from hi-profile families and have political connections. “It was a pre-planned murder and not an accident. The police is trying to cover it up as the children come from wealthy and influential families. I am shattered and saddened to see that my grandson did not get justice,” said Krishna Pal, grandmother of Aabesh Dasgupta.

A 20-second CCTV footage that the police examined indicated that Dasgupta tried to jump the ramp connecting the lawn to the parking lot, while holding an alcohol bottle in his hand. While jumping, he tripped and fell on the broken bottle and suffered an injury to the armpit, police said. This injury leads to profuse bleeding due to the auxiliary artery getting damaged, they added.

The footage further showed that Aabesh got up on his own and staggered while walking backwards. After taking a few steps forward, he fell again and all his friends rushed in to help him. While some of his friends tried to arrange for a cab, some reached out to the guards and people around.

Meanwhile, some children reached out to Amit Chaudhuri, the father of one of the children and a resident of the same residential complex. Chaudhuri along with his wife and daughter, besides Aabesh’s friends rushed him to the hospital where he was declared brought dead.

However, questions were also raised about why the friend who invited Aabesh to the party left while he was rushed to the hospital. Police clarified that the concerned friend was to visit his mother in the hospital, who is suffering from cancer and that all call records and evidences corroborated this.
