In July this year, the Delhi High Court sought the stand of the Centre, the Delhi government, and civic authorities on providing facilities that allowed mothers to breastfeed in public places.

However, despite this, it appears that establishments such as malls want to take law into their own hands. Take the example of Kolkata's South City Mall that has faced flak on social media, after a post by a woman accusing the mall of publicly shaming a mother while she was breastfeeding in public.

The post shared by Kolkata resident Trisha Ghosh Moitra, who highlighted the response the mall gave to the mother.

"As some of you have noticed, I have posted about @southcitymall Kolkata not having basic amenities for kids i.e baby room, feeding zone etc. which is there for any shopping mall. They are asking toilets to be used for feeding, etc. Here's the thing, would you have your food in the toilet? If not, how can you make a baby feed there?" Moitra stated in her post.

The mother, who was publicly shamed by the mall was then told that 'they could not compromise the privacy of other people in a public place.'

The response by the mall that they later deleted

The mall faced a lot of flak for this post, and had to delete it, replacing it with another post that looked like an apology. "We had made an unconditional apology for the remark/comment made by our agency in accordance to the feedback/comment written by our valuable visitor in relate to her inconvenience for feeding the baby... We clarify that South City tries to take care of the smallest requirement a Patron would need at Mall at any time. It is our agent who without knowing the facts made such a comment in response to the feedback of our Patron and we have taken the duly required action against the same yesterday itself."

Last year, the Mumbai police towed away a car after a mother was breastfeeding her child inside it. A traffic constable was suspended in that incident.
