Kerala floods: Red alert withdrawn for all districts, rains likely to continue

Fishermen warned to not venture into waters

The Indian Meterological department warned of more heavy "red" category rains on Saturday as tens of thousands of people were still stuck on the rooftops of houses and community centres. Rescue workers have yet to reach many flooded areas, some too narrow for boats to navigate. The relief for Kerala is that there is expected to be reduced intensity of rainfall in the state. A Skymet weather report also suggested that the low intensity rainfall may result in receeding of flood waters.

Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has restored all its services to Kerala's Ernakulam, Kottayam, Thrissur, Palghat, Kozhikode, Kannur and Trivandrum. First service to start at 4 pm to Trivandrum from Bengaluru. Services to Kasaragod not restored.

The red alert withdrawn for all districts of Kerala today. Orange alert has, however, been issued for 10 districts, yellow alert for 2 districts. Rescue operations underway across the state

Meanwhile, the Indian Meterological department on Sunday issued a number of releases, where they announced that Thiruvananthapuram will receive light to moderate rainfall till Thursday. Kollam, however, will continue to receive heavy rainfall today, but will see the intensity reducing from Monday.

Similarly, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Thrissur will receive heavy rainfall today, but will see a reduced intensity in the next 23 hours, which will continue reducing in the next few days.

"Strong winds mainly from Westerly direction speed reaching 35-45 kmph gusting to 60 kmph likely along and off Karnataka- Kerala coast & over Lakshadweep area. Sea condition is likely to be rough to very rough along and off Karnataka coast and over South and central Arabian Sea. Fishermen are advised not to venture into sea along and off Karnataka coast and over South & central Arabian Sea," the IMD said in a press release.

Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday said death toll had reached 357. Earlier on Friday, describing Kerala floods as the worst in 100 years, the CM said, ""Kerala is facing its worst flood in 100 years. 80 dams opened, 324 lives lost and 223139 people are in about 1500+ relief camps."

Kerala has been dealing with unprecedented floods following torrential rains that also triggered landslides, claiming over 300 lives since August 8 besides disrupting normalcy in every sphere of life. While every citizen prays for the well being of god's own country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also took a stock of the relief operations in the city.

 Earlier, Lawyers and judges from the Supreme Court have organised a drive to collect relief materials for flood-hit Kerala. Justices Kurien Joseph and KM Joseph were among those collecting the relief materials, reports added.
