Clamour is growing for summoning a Special Session of the Legislature to pass a law that will make rape against minors punishable by death in the restive Jammu and Kashmir.

Leading the chorus is the main opposition National Conference, which has formally demanded a special legislative session so that it could propose a Bill mandating death penalty for such heinous crimes against children.

“My heart goes out to the victim’s family. Strictest and most exemplary punishment should be awarded to the culprits. Our party demands a special legislative session so that it could, as announced earlier, propose a Bill mandating the death penalty for such heinous crimes against children,” said Farooq Abdullah after chairing a meeting of the Provincial Committee for Kashmir at party headquarters.

The demand for special session comes three days after CM Mufti announced to enact a new law and make rape punishable by death.

“We will never ever let another child suffer in this way. We will bring a new law that will make the death penalty mandatory for those who rape minors,” Mehbooba tweeted.
