Kashmir: Policeman killed as mob pushes police vehicle into River Jhelum

Three police personnel went missing in the clashes on Saturday.

Officials in Kashmir said that a policeman was killed as a mob pushed a police vehicle into River Jhelum in Anantnag district on Sunday. The policeman was sitting in the bunker when the incident took place.

Jammu and Kashmir remained on edge on Sunday as the death toll of civilians in the clash with security forces reached 16, after protesting against the death of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani.  Earlier, 12 civilians were killed in the clashes a day after Burhan Wani and his two associates were killed in an encounter in Anantnag. 

State Intelligence chief SM Sahai said that three police personnel were missing while 96 security force personnel were seriously injured. A  masive  hunt is on to find the missing policemen but there is still no information about their whereabouts.

One among the deceased drowned in local area while fleeing. More than hundred protesters have also been injured in the clashes across Kashmir.  

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has chaired a high-level meeting to review the law and order situation in Jammu and Kashmir. The Centre has reportedly rushed 12 companies of CRPF to Kashmir to assist the local administration in maintaining law and order situation in the area. Singh spoke to JK CM Mehbooba Mufti to assure her of all Central assistance to deal with the situation. 

Rajnath had said the Centre is working with the State government to bring normalcy in the valley. In a tweet, Singh appealed to the people to remain calm and maintain peace.
