As lakhs of DMK workers mourned the death of their 'Kalaignar' M Karunanidhi, party's working president MK Stalin appealed for peace. In a statement issued soon after Karunanidhi's death, he requested party workers who have assembled outside Kauvery Hospital to disperse peacefully and leave the area.

Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M Karunanidhi passed away at 94 on Tuesday. He is survived by two sons - MK Alagiri, MK Stalin - and daughter Kanimozhi.

"DMK working president MK Stalin asks the party cadres to maintain peace and adhere to party discipline," the party said in a statement.

He asked party workers to ensure that they don't bring disrepute Kalaignar's legacy, and ensure that the public are not put to any hardship, the statement said.

"There will be people who will want to cause a bad name to the party using this sad situation. You should identify such anti-social elements, prevent any untoward incidents and hand them over to the police," Stalin said.

Earlier, Kauvery Hospital, where the DMK patriarch was admitted since July 28, said in a statement that 94-year old leader breathed his last at 6.10 pm.

"With deep anguish we announce the demise of our beloved Kalaignar M Karunanidhi on 07.08.2018 at 6.10 pm. Despite the best possible efforts by our team of doctors and nurses to resuscitate him, he failed to respond," the hospital said.

"We profoundly mourn the loss of one of the tallest leaders of India and we share the grief of family members and fellow Tamilians worldwide," a press release by Dr Aravindan Selvaraj, Executive Director of Kauvery Hospital, said.

The veteran politician was shifted to the hospital on July 28 from his Gopalapuram residence following a dip in his blood pressure and he was under treatment in the Intensive Care Unit ever since.

Beginning his political career as a 14-year-old activist in the anti-Hindi agitation of the late 1930s, he quickly became the voice of the surging Dravidian movement led by 'Periyar' EV Ramasami, CN Annadurai 'Anna', and others.

He started his career as a screenwriter in the Tamil film industry. Through the movie ‘Parasakthi’ his political ideas were propagated. He started working as a Scriptwriter for Jupiter Pictures.
