The Congress today nominated former Union minister C M Ibrahim as the party's candidate for the by-election to the Karnataka Legislative Council.

"Congress president Sonia Gandhi has approved the name of C M Ibrahim, former Union minister, as the party candidate for the by-election to be held for the membership of the Karnataka Legislative Council," a statement from AICC general secretary Janardan Dwivedi said.

The Karnataka Legislative Council bypoll will be held on August 31, which was necessitated following the death of Vimala Gowda, who died on April 17.

The Election Commission has already announced the poll schedule, and the filing of nomination started on August 14 with the issue of notification.

The last date for filing nomination is August 21.

The Karnataka assembly polls slated for early next year.
