Actor Kamal Haasan has been at the receiving end from the ruling AIADMK leaders in Tamil Nadu after he commented that "there's corruption everywhere in the state". Finance minister D Jayakumar dared the actor to enter politics to make such comments, while his colleague, Municipal Administration Minister SP Velumani, threatened to order an audit to find out whether the actor had paid taxes for all his movies.

Jayakumar on Monday wondered why Haasan had not levelled such allegations when late chief minister J Jayalalithaa was alive and questioned why he was speaking out now. "Even if he speaks, there should be some truth to it. There is not an iota of truth (to his allegations)," he said.

Velumani had sought evidence from Kamal to back his allegations, while Law Minister C Ve Shanmugham wanted a case to be filed under the SC/SC (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against actor for the "slum behaviour" comment made by one of the participants of the Bigg Boss reality show, which is hosted by Haasan.

However, the opposition parties — DMK, CPI (M) and CPI along with the AIADMK led by O Panneerselvam — have to come to the rescue of Haasan. DMK Working President MK Stalin said on Monday that he has been stating for long that the Tamil Nadu government is steeped in corruption, but the government has neither threatened him nor filed a case against him.

However, the ministers are threatening the actor for saying that no government department is free from corruption, Stalin said.

Former Chief Minister Panneerselvam said everyone was entitled to express their opinions in a democracy.
