India's first submarine of the Scorpene class, Kalvari, is all set for harbour and sea trials.

Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd had on Tuesday performed a traditional ceremony to mark Kalvari being separated from the pontoon and set afloat at the Naval Dockyard, Mumbai. On Thursday, the vessel sailed back to the Mazagon Dock Ltd.

The vessel is now slated to undergo rigorous trials and tests which would certify each system to its fullest capacity.

Initially, harbour trials will be conducted, followed by installation of weaponry. Sea trials would commence at a later stage with the weapons on board.

Rear Admiral R K Shrawat, chairman and managing director of Mazagon Dock Ltd said, "Setting afloat of the boat is a historic milestone...it would be commissioned in September 2016."
