Union Minority Affairs Minister, K Rahman Khan, on Sunday held Bharatiya Janata Party and its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi responsible for the Assam violence on the minority community.

Joining the Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah obliquely linking Modi for his comments on Bangladeshi immigrants and the simultaneous Assam violence yesterday, Khan seemed to have agreed with Omar's viewpoint.

"It is Modi and the BJP which has created instability in that area, where 30 percent of the population having 90 percent representation in the council. Now with such statements of the BJP and Modi's statement will raise the Bangladeshi issue, they always raise this issue during the time of elections and victims are the poor Muslims in Assam," Khan replied.

"This is the consequences of the BJP polices. The other day I saw an interview of the BJP president, Rajnath Singh, where he said that those Hindus who have come from West Bengal will be treated as refugees, while those who have come after 1971 will be asked to go back. This has emboldened these forces, this is what we were afraid of," Khan said.

"The very fact that it was the NDA government which created Bodoland where large majority of population were ignored. Now Narendra Modi again raises the Bangladeshi issues, which has become an election plank and therefore when the elections are on his statement was irresponsible," Khan added.

The Union Minority Affairs Minister, also criticized Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi for his administration's repeated failure in checking violence in the Bodo dominated area.

"I strongly condemn that 32 innocent people have been killed in Assam's Kokrajhar, a Bodo-inhabited area. This is the second major incident which has taken place in the last two years. Somewhere the state government has been seen earlier also that it was not able to control violence. The chief minister of the state should take effective steps and see that the people who were behind this should be apprehended and serious action should be taken," Khan said.

He stated that the matter has been taken up by the Home Ministry, and that the Assam chief minister has entrusted the matter to NIA to conduct a probe .

"The Home Ministry has taken up the matter; the chief minister has entrusted the matter to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), now the NIA will take up this investigation. I am sure people who are behind this will be dealt with. I squarely blame the BJP leaders, including Modi for their irresponsible statements," Khan added.
