As the nation remembers the braveheart, Indore’s Jwala on Sunday announced the launch of magazine on women issues and a self defense workshop.

Social activist Divya Gupta’s Jwala will also give a Nirbhaya award and establish a 24-hour  helpline number for women.

To mark one year of Delhi rape case and the resultant mass upsurge on awareness about crimes against women, Jwala and ODA organised a day-long event ‘Nirbhaya Day- A Day of Pledge’ at Daly College auditorium.

The event was followed by poster and slogan making competition. A documentary film on Nirbhaya case was shown and the event picked up its tempo.

A number of speakers, Nirbhaya’s lawyer Priya Hingorani, eminent writer Swati Tiwari, psychologist Vinay Mishra, principal of Daly College Sumer Singh, film maker Sanjay Panjwani and politician Shobha Ojha spoke on the issue and ways to deal with such incidents.

“The films and books are a great way to make children understand their responsibilities,” said Sumer Singh while appreciating the film.

According to him, parents need to educate their wards especially male child about their responsibilities.

Shobha Ojha believes that male child from age group nine to 18 are most vulnerable and should be trained properly. She appreciated the way that Indian women are protesting against sexual harassment and are getting aware of the laws made for them while referring to Tarun Tejpal case.

Next up on stage was one of the most important speakers of the event, Priya Hingorani who shared with people about the conflict areas in Indian laws.

“I know that Nirbhaya died before she was taken to Singapore. It was so sad that government was not willing to handle the situation. There are so many incidents like these when government could not take proper actions,” she added while mentioning the need of uniform civil laws for women of all communities. It was followed by session on prevention of sexual abuse by psychologist Vinay Mishra. He spoke about the reasons behind people committing sex crimes.

“The imbalanced hormones,  factors like having witnessed domestic violence, social cultural events like being exposed to broader social messages supportive of aggression are some of the major causes of such incident,” he said.
