JNU row: Delhi court extends Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya's police custody

Police custody of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya was extended by Delhi court by one day on Monday.

Khalid and Bhattacharya are facing sedition charges. Last week, Delhi court had sent the duo to three-day police custody, which was extended by the court on Saturday by two days. 

Khalid and Bhattacharya had moved the High Court last week seeking protection in order to surrender but the court, while directing the students to surrender, adjourned the hearing for protection till Wednesday. 

JNU students' union president Kanhaiya Kumar is already behind bars in Tihar Jail, again for sedition.

The Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear the plea seeking criminal contempt proceedings against Kanhaiya Kumar and five other varsity students facing sedition charges and former professor SAR Geelani. The apex court asked the petitioner to take consent of the Attorney General before hearing.

The contempt petition had been filed in the Supreme Court seeking action against the students, who allegedly raised anti-India slogans during an event and also condemned the judiciary for the hanging of 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.

The petition states the students have crossed every limit of freedom of speech and expression by calling the Epitome of Justice as judicial killers.
