Even though Indian Army Chief Bipin Rawat urged local people to extend their support to maintain peace in Jammu and Kashmir, stones were pelted at security forces after Friday prayers in Srinagar.

Local residents pelted stones near Jama Masjid situated at Nowhatta.

On Wednesday, Rawat had also warned stone pelters that they won't be spared if they continue resorting to negative acts.

Four army personnel, including a Major, lost their lives in two encounters in the Bandipora and Handwara areas of north Kashmir on a few days ago.

However, the Congress has cornered the Centre over the lack of any initiative to solve the situation in Kashmir. Following this, the government hit out at Congress party, asking it to not indulge in politicking at the cost of security forces' morale.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi extended support to Army Chief Bipin Rawat for his strict message to "anti-national elements" in Jammu and Kashmir.

"The people who are harbouring and sponsoring terrorism are equally responsible for spreading terror in the world. It is important to consider the one harbouring terrorism and treat it as equal," said Naqvi.
