A day after Kashmir students studying in Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) threatened to leave en masse to protest their counterparts' suspension over a prayer meet for slain terrorist Mannan Wani, Jammu and Kashmir governor Satya Pal Malik on Tuesday sent out an SOS to the Centre, seeking its intervention to ensure smooth studies of the Kashmiri students in the varsity.

Sedition charges were slapped against three Kashmiri students for allegedly raising anti-India slogans and planning to offer funeral prayers-in-absentia for scholar-turned-militant Mannan Wani on Friday. Showcause notice was also issued to nine students. Later, the students threatened to leave the campus en masse if the action against their comrades was not annulled.

On Tuesday morning, Governor Malik spoke to Union Minister for Human Resource Development Prakash Javadekar, seeking his intervention to ensure smooth studies of the Kashmiri students at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

The governor also spoke to AMU's Vice-Chancellor, Prof Tariq Mansoor in this regard. "Malik urged Javadekar and Prof Tariq to ensure that the issue is amicably resolved at the earliest and there is no disruption of studies of the Kashmiri students and they are allowed to continue their studies in a safe, secure and well-disposed academic environment," said an official spokesman for the governor.

Earlier, the governor's administration also took up the issue with the UP government as well.

The governor's intervention comes a day after the People's Democratic Party (PDP) president and former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti stoked a major controversy claiming that Mannan Wani was a victim of relentless violence in Kashmir.
