Battle-hardened Jammu and Kashmir Police suffered a major blow when a personal security officer (PSO) of sub divisional police officer (SDPO) Bijbhera Irshad Ahmad Rather decamped with four AK 47 assault rifles apparently to join the militant ranks in south Kashmir.

Constable Shakoor Ahmad fled with weapons of his colleagues after they left them with him in order to visit Irshad, who is undergoing treatment in the army hospital. Irshad was grievously injured when militants attacked him last month.

Ahmad later posted his picture on the social networking sites with four riffles strapped around his body. Hailing from Shopian district of south Kashmir, Ahmad was posted in police station Bijbhera, the home town of late chief minister Mufti Mohommad Sayeed. He was one of the cops who accompanied Irshad to hospital when he was injured in the militant attack in December last.

Police have sounded a high alert and massive hunt has been launched to arrest the errant cop. Police suspects that Ahmad might have joined militant ranks in south Kashmir which has become hotbed of militancy. The area is the bastion of Hizbul Mujhadeen group led by most wanted commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani of Tral.

"We are verifying the facts. So far he has not been traced," said SJM Gillani, inspector general of police, Kashmir zone.

Police have put the investigations on the fast track mode and alerted all the police stations and posts to remain vigilant. What has send alarm bells ringing is that two local youth of Shopian have also gone missing at the same time? Police suspects that they too might have been lured by Ahmad to join the militancy.

This is the second incident in the last one year when a cop has decamped with official weapon to join militant ranks.

In March last year, Naseer Ahmad Pandith a cop posted at the guard duty at the residence of the then J&K works minister Mohommad Altaf Bukhari's residence in Sheikhbagh area of Srinagar decamped with official weapon and joined Hizbul Mujhadeen outfit led by Burhan.

Pandith has become one of the most wasted ultras of south Kashmir. He was recently seen in a picture with Burhan Muzaffar Wani which was posted on social media.
