The incident took place in a village under Deodand police station area of Jharkhand’s Godda district. The police have arrested four people for their involvement in the killing.
The two victims have been identified as – Sirabuddin Ansari (35) and Murtaza Ansari (30).
According to reports, the victims reportedly have a history of stealing cattle and they were part of a gang of five that entered a village.
Reports said that some villages raised the alarm when they got to know about the thieves and they were chased after more people gathered. Later, the villagers caught hold of two of them and thrashed them leading to their death.
"Villagers caught hold of two of the thieves and started beating them due to which they died", reported NDTV quoting Godda Superintendent of Police (SP) Rajeev Ranjan Singh.
The police have also registered an FIR for allegedly stealing buffaloes against unidentified persons.
Meanwhile, in Maharashtra, two men were beaten to death and seven others were injured after a mob of villagers attacked them on suspicion of being robbers in Chandgaon village in Vaijapur taluka on June 8. The lynching was triggered by fake messages in circulation on the social media.

Recently, a court gave life sentences to 11 persons in connection with the lynching of a meat trader in June last year over the suspicion that he was carrying beef in his car.
A group of people had lynched Alimuddin Ansari, 40, in Bazaar Tand locality of Ramgarh town on June 29, 2017, on the suspicion that he was carrying beef in his car.
