Swing of Jat voters will decide the fate of the BJP and the joint opposition candidates in Kairana Lok Sabha by-polls, which is scheduled to go for polling on Monday.

The BJP had won the seat for the first time in 2014 when Jats voted for the party in large numbers after Muzaffarnagar riots which polarised Hindu votes. Jats are the third largest population in Kairana after Muslims and Jatavs (Dalits).

In the changing caste equations, Jats in the constituency feel alienated from the BJP after it did not withdraw Muzaffarnagar cases against them lodged by the erstwhile Akhilesh Yadav regime. If they voted along with Muslims, Jatavs and OBCs in favour of the joint opposition candidate Tabassum Hasan, it will be a tightrope walk for the BJP candidate Mriganka Singh to retain her father late Hukum Singh's seat.

But on the eve of the polling, Jats and even their Khap Panchayats appeared divided on who to support. Though majority of Khaps have assured support to the BJP candidate, a few prominent ones have sided with the RLD candidate.

The BJP strategist, however, exuded confidence that by and large the community was with the party and they would not want to let the seat go into the hands of RLD which did nothing for them except for using them as their vote-bank.

What is going against the RLD candidate is that none of the joint opposition leaders like Akhilesh Yadav or Mayawati campaigned in favour of the Tabassum Hasan. The BSP Supremo Mayawati has not even made any statement with regard to supporting the RLD candidate. It has created a lot of confusion in the minds of the voters.

Meanwhile, polling parties were dispatched to their respective booths on Sunday. The Security forces conducted a flag march in sensitive areas. The boundaries of the Shamli district have been sealed and extra force has been deployed at the sensitive polling centres and booths to conduct peaceful, free and fair elections.
