The Jammu and Kashmir High Court on Thursday banned the sale of beef in the state.

A bench of Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur and Justice Janak Raj Kotwal issued the order on Wednesday after hearing a PIL against cow slaughter filed by advocate Parimoksh Seth, reports Hindustan Times.

The PIL said that despite provisions of the Ranbir Penal Code that made killing of bovine animals a punishable offence, the slaughter was rampant in the state.

The director general of police was directed to issue directives to the local police and strictly enforce the ban.

The High Court's order comes two days after the Mira-Bhayender Municipal Corporation in Mumbai imposed a meat ban during Jain festival this month.
