Gurunath Meiyappan, who is the main suspect in the IPL betting scam, was a daily visitor to the hotel room of MS Dhoni, the captain of Chennai Super Kings, who is listed as ‘Individual No 2’ in the Mudgal Committee report, dna has reliably learnt.
Justice Mukul Mudgal panel-appointed investigator BB Mishra’s (deputy director, National Narcotics Bureau) report has found during the four-month long investigation that if there was any individual who had direct access to individual No. 2 room, it was only Meiyappan.
Dhoni used to meet everybody else in the business centre of the team hotel due to the restrictions imposed by BCCI’s Anti-Corruption Unit. But investigations found that Meiyappan had personal access to Dhoni’s hotel room. And Meiyappan was in continuous touch with Dhoni almost on daily basis, including match days, during the course of Indian Premier League season six, dna has learnt.
The investigators apparently reached this conclusion after questioning the hotel staff and several other team officials and players. Meiyappan had direct access to team captain’s room because of the fact that he was presented to everyone as ‘CSK owner’.
It has been argued by Srinivasan’s counsel in the ongoing hearings in the Supreme Court that Meiyappan lost heavy amounts in betting. “If he had the inside information, it would not have been the case,” counsel had stated. But the Mishra panel in its investigations have found that they used to meet twice or thrice a day.
The 5000-page-report has not been made public. It is only Justice Mudgal’s 29-page synopsis which has been distributed to all the concerned parties and that, too, without mentioning the names of cricketers who have been listed by numbers and not by name.
Despite Justice Mudgal’s findings about Meiyappan’s betting activities and that he was indeed a team official, Srinivasan and owning company CSK insist that Meiyappan has nothing to do with team affairs and he had no information about team strategy’.
