Ratcheting up attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Congress on Thursday asked him if Tamil Nadu Chief Minister E K Palaniswami is fit to be dismissed in view of the brutal police action on people protesting against the Sterlite Industries that resulted in 11 deaths.

"Why is the PM who tweets on every issue and is right now telling people about the importance of fitness is silent on such a massive tragedy? We want to know from him what does he think about Tamil Nadu's chief minister who also happens to be the home minister. Is he not fit to be dismissed in view of the massacre of people who were protesting against environmental degradation?" asked Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi.

Raising question on the existence of Sterlite Industries, Congress wanted to know why did the NDA government in December 2014 changed the rules made by the UPA government thus making environment clearance for hazardous projects easier in special industrial zones.

"After coming to power the NDA government in December 2014 changed the rules that allowed the projects not to seek environmental clearance if it was permitted in the industrial zone. Our government had made the environment clearance specific to the project," said Singhvi asking who gave the permission to set up the project in Tuticorin after it stopped by the Maharashtra government because of environmental concerns.

He said the people want to know why did the protesting people were treated as if they were terrorists in J&K and who ordered firing on them and why?

"It was in everybody's knowledge that the protest will take place on May 22. The police had prior information about the programme at least a month in advance, then why were they fired upon," said Singhvi.
