As the protest against the Centre seeking the setting up of the Cauvery Management Board intensified across the state, a chorus seeking cancellation of the Indian Premier League T20 cricket matches to be held in Chennai as a mark of protest on Cauvery issue has gained support in the social media after a group of fringe political parties mooted the idea.

A group of fringe parties including Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi (TVK), Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam and Social Democratic Party of India urged the Tamil Nadu government and the police to not to allow the cricket matched to be held in the city in the view of the ongoing struggle seeking the CMB and the Cauvery Water Regulatory Committee as per the Supreme Court order.

“In order to condemn the Centre which shows no regard for the livelihood and the identity of the Tamils, we request that the IPL should not take place here – at a time when Tamilians are bursting with anger. If the BCCI conducts the IPL here, and the Tamil Nadu government and the Tamil Nadu police support it, then all those who eat the food produced by farmers will buy tickets and go inside the stadium and protest in a democratic way,” TVK president Panruti T Velmurugan told reporters here.

He urged Tamil Nadu government, BCCI and the IPL management to not to push them to that level. “If all our notifications on this matter are ignored, we are ready to come to the streets (to protest),” he said.

Manithaneya Jananayaga Katchi leader and sitting MLA Thamimun Ansari who won from the AIADMK symbol warned that if the cricket matches were held, his party cadres would enter the stadium to stop the match. “We will also gherao the cricketers,” he warned. Naam Tamilar Katchi founder Seeman said that the matches would not be allowed to be held here.

The call for the cancellation of the cricket matches also found support in the social media with hashtag #NOIPLINTAMILNADU trended in twitter. “I will not be attending any #IPL matches this season & will not participate in any IPL related shows on TV until #CauveryMangementBoard or equivalent is formed. There r some things in life bigger than a game & I believe that this is a time to stand with our farmers,” tweeted Sumanth Raman, a well-known cricket commentator in Tamil.
