Despite of the dire need of more shelter homes, there is not a single functional shelter home for the domestic violence victims in Indore. Following which, the Women and Child Development (WCD) has decided to rope in more NGOs for women's protection.

Three NGOs have expressed interest to the WCD for offering shelter to domestic violence victims.

"We are considering the proposal and one of them will be included under the scheme," said WCD district programme officer Vishal Nadkarni.

There are two schemes in Indore for the victims including the central government's Sawdhaar and state's Usha Kiran Yojana.

Recently, two shelter homes for women including Akhil Bhartiya Mahila Sabha and Kasturba Gandhi Ashram have submitted proposals for closure to the Women and Child Development (WCD).

"Vahma and Kasturba Gandhi will work under the Swadhaar scheme but there is no shelter home functional under the state's Usha Kiran scheme," said Nadkarni.

Officials claimed that the shortage is such that even in the presence of Swadhaar, there is a requirement for running the state's scheme.

"As per the order, Usha Kiran need not be initiated in places where Swadhaar is enforced but Indore registers one of the highest number of cases of domestic violence which calls for the need of more shelter homes in Indore," Nadkarni said.

The closure of shelter homes in Indore comes on account of personal reasons of the NGOs.

Officials claimed that majority victims who were provided shelter at the Mahila Sabha were either employed and made self-reliant or were sent home after proper counselling.

"There were 22 residents at Mahila Sabha, out of which two were left out. Out of the two victims, one was transferred and the other one was sent home after counselling," claimed WCD official Vishnu Rathore.
