India, Pakistan border forces hold meet

In light of the heightened tension at the border, the Border Security Force (BSF) and Pakistan Rangers held Sector Commander Level Flag Meeting on the International Border in Suchetgarh in Jammu on Thursday. The 30-minute meeting was held at the request of the Pakistan Rangers.

The five-member BSF delegation was led by PS Dhiman, Deputy Inspector General, Jammu Sector while Brigadier Amjad Hussain, Sector Commander Chenab Rangers, Sialkot Punjab led the 10-member Pakistan delegation, including the Wing Commanders.

"During the meeting, the BSF strongly objected to the dastardly acts of snipers shooting at two BSF soldiers on January 3 and 17. The BSF also objected to unprovoked firing and shelling, targeting number of Indian villages, innocent civilian and their properties, conveying the strongest protest with a message that such provocational acts will not be tolerated," said the BSF spokesman at Jammu Frontier.

This is the first Sector Commander level meeting between the two border-guarding forces since heavy shelling and firing began on the International Border last week. Last Sector Commander Level meeting was held on September 29, 2017.

"During this period, the BSF successfully foiled a number of infiltration attempts from Pakistan soil," said the spokesman.

More than 13 people have been killed in the Pakistani shelling on Line of Control (LoC) and IB since January 17. More than 50 people have suffered injuries and 50,000 people have fled their homes in Jammu division. Schools and educational institutions in the five-kilometre range of IB and LoC have been shut as a precautionary measure.

Meanwhile, a tearful send-off was given to Naik Jagadish, who laid down his life guarding the nation's frontiers while serving at the LoC in Krishna Ghati sector.
